Summons were issued to 8 people regarding Wilpattu forest vandalism
Summons were issued to 8 people to appear before the Court of Appeal with regard to the deforestation of the Wilpattu national park surrounding and resettlement of people. It included the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, former Minister Rishard Badiudeen, Central Environmental Authority and the District Secretary as main respondents..
The order was issued when a petition filed by the Centre for Environmental Justice regarding the matter was taken for hearing before the Court of Appeal on 4th August 2015. At that time, 8 respondents including Minister Rishard Badiudeen were ordered to appear before the Court of Appeal on the 16th of September.
The lawyer appearing on behalf of the Centre for Environmental Justice attorney-at-law Raveendranath Dabare has stated that they have provided facts concerning the trespassing, illegal forest clearance and illegal constructions adding that these offenses are punishable by law.
